NAVAL DEFENCES REAR- ADMIRAL UTTERS WARNING AGAINST WEAKNESS DECLINE IN STRENGTH

MELBOURNE7" Monday. Rear-Admiral Hyde uttered a warning f egarding inadequacy of the naval defences of the Empire. . "I am convinced," he said, "that we are damned nnless we wake np to what the sea means to us. If we do not recognise that, it is the end of the British Empire and pf our white Australia." Rear-Admiral Hyde said Siam had 4800 naval officers and men, Chile 7660, and Australia 3100. At the close of ths Napoleonic wars, Great Britain's naval complement numbered 150,000. Now the naval force of the entire Empire is ahout 90,000.
