FEED COVERED FOR pVER WEEK BY HEAVY" SNOWFALL
— By Telegraph — Copyright)
CARTERTON, Monday. A recent snowstorm which visited Wairarapa has proved very disastrous particularly in the Maungarakei district. So heavy was the fa.ll that dividing fences between, several properties were all covered, so that sheep and cattle in their wanderings to find feed became hoxed in gullies in which there were snowdrifts from 15 to 20 feet deep. Heavy frost, which followed the fall of snow, froze the surface, sheep were affected by snow blindness, and in their aimless ramb'lings many were drowned in creeks and gullies. For over a week snow covered all feed, and hoth sheep and cattle were starving to death. The weight of the snow broke huge limbs off forest trees, and this green stuff the animals avidly devoured, even to bark. The position is now improving, though further hack on the hills there are still deep drifts. Losses in stbck are considerable.
