VENABLES ESCAPES
BUT STGPS WHEN WARDER F1RES SHOT OVER HEAD AUCKLAND, Wednesday. An unsuccessful clash for liberty was made by a prisoner at Mt. Eclen Prison i;his morning. The incident occupied only a few miilutes. The prisoner stopped and submitted to recapture when a shot was fired over his head. The prisoner, R. V. Venables, who was sentenced in Vvr ellington in 1927 to seven years iraprisonment for indecent assault, was working with others in a stone quarry close to the Colonial Ammunition Company's works. When obscurcd from the warders' view by a small shed, he made a dash up the quarry face. He was seen by the warders as he reached the first of two fences on the side of the quarry. The prisoner climbed the first fence as th'e shot was fired by one of the warders, which warned him that he had been seen. He jumped to the other side of the fence and waited for his pursuers, when he submitted quietly to recapture. It is stated that there was little possibility of his making an escape, as he had another fence to negotiate. The prison authorities state that the prisoner will not be be charged in the Court with attempted escape, but that he will be dealt with at the prison.
