At the meeting of the General Purposes Committee of the Opotiki Borough Council, held on Tuesday, a letter was received from the Marine Department advising that the department was satisfied with the explanation regarding wharf administration and was plcased that the council had been able to adopt the Minister's suggestion in connection with a reduction in the charges for wool. The Post and Telegraph Department replied to a letter in connection with telephone poles in the district, and advised that the poles were really ouite sound and would be alright when de-sapped. A lengthy letter was received from the Unemployment Committee explaining the duties. of the secretary and giving its reasons for considering an increase in his remuneration necessary. It was decided that the council grant of 10s per week should be raised to £1 per week. In reply to a suggestion by Mr. Shalfoon that all ragwort should be sprayed, the foreman advised that the matter was in hand and would be finished by the end of the week. Mr. Shalfoon expressed ,his opinion that the weeds should be cut and then the stalks sprayed with the powder. Stock Route Signs Cr. Budd suggested that stock route signs should be posted in Maori as well as English as the- Maori drivers appeared to be consistently ignoring them. It was decided to adopt the suggestion. In reply to a suggestion from Mr. H. Hartshorne, it was decided to authorise him to erect wire netting cages in the wharf shed to protect goods awaiting transit down the coast from the depredations of rats and birds. The foreman asked if the council would give Mr. C. Tabb any assistance in piping drainage water through his property in Eichard Street as some of the water from the road drains ran through a drain on this property. On the suggestion of Mr. S. Shalfoon, it was decided that Mr. Tabb should be asked to write to the council on the matter and that the council should then examine the property. It was decided that the committee appointed should make a tour of inspection of the island reserve at 9.30 a.m. on Thursday. In reply to a question by the clerk, it was decided that payment for materials for the bridge, etc., for the island should be made out of the relief fund and not the domain fund. On the request of Cr. Budd, the committee was authorised to carry out what tree planting and fencing it considered necessary.
