Qbituary The death is reported' of Tiaki Pa- • ora, one of the leading members of J the Mauri community and a leading chief. The deceased was a member ' of the Opotiki School Committee for 30 years, as well as a lay reader and Sunday School superintendent of. the Church of England. He was keenly interested in all young peoples' activities. . Gift To School When the question of whether the council, should provide 40 battens for the school fence 'was being discussed ! at the meeting of the Opotiki Bor- , ough Council qn Tuesday, Mr. J. J. j Moody, of Waiotahi, advised that he ' would be plaased to make th'e school a gift of the battens. i Camping Ground Charges ] At a meeting of the General PurI poses Committee of the Opotiki Borj ough Council, on Tuesday evening, Cr. Shalfoon suggested that the fence ! round the wharf reserve for motor campers, should be extended to the old wharf, and that th,e charges for motorists using the reserve be reducI ed from 2s 6d per night to 2s 6d for ! the first night, ls 6d per night there- ' after, or 7s 6d per week. He conj'tended that this would encourage 1 motorists to camp near the town rath- ; er than drive them away. It was decided that this should be done. "No Nothing" While a discussion was in progress concerning the retrenchment of an employee, at Tuesday night's meeting j of the Opotiki Borough Council, Cr. i Hichens suggested that if Cr. Tabb 1 would wait until the three months' : postponement was up he felt quite sure that the matter would then be finalised. Cr. Tahb: "Yes, and if we go on like this, people will be say- '' ing that we are like a lot of whitebait, i no backbone, no bones, no nothing." | W.D.F.U. Visit A party from Opotiki visited the I Taneatua branch of the Women's Dij vision on Monday evening to play | Flag 500. The winners were Mrs. E. j Euddick, Mrs. H- Haywood, Mr. G. C. j Lord and Mr. H. C. McCready. Booby prizes were won by: Mrs. G. H. Merrie, Miss M Swannell, Mr. C. Peebles, Mrs. A. Dodgson (Opotiki). St. Stephen's Church The grounds around St. Stephen's Church are being cieared by a working bee. New gates have been made and put up while money has already been raised for the construetion of a new fence. It is hoped to plant native trees and flowering shrubs around about the church. Some of the unemployed are helping with the digging, etc. Girl Guides The first Opotiki company of Girl Guides paraded on Tuesday evening in the Methodist Hall. Mrs. A. E. • Martin, captain of the company, together with some of the older guides, is trying to form a ranger troop in Opotiki. The evening was spent mostly in work, the girls being taught j bandaging, second class studies, and some of the new members, tenderfoot work. Neyer Died Before Most of the shopkeepers in Opotiki report that business is looking up a bit. this month. Not so with one man, however, who on being aslced cheerily "How's business?" solemnly replied: "Please don't speak of the dead." Another man on being asked j for particulars of a recently deceased person for an obituary notice, reported amongst other things that "He had never died before."
