SPREAD OF BREAKING AND ENTERING CRIMES

WANGANUI, Monday. "This class of crime is becoming d together too common, and is very lisquietening with young men like :hese going about the country as they have been doing, entering shops, damaging property, and taking goods," -raid his Honour, Mr. Justice McGregor, at the Supreme Court to-day, vhen imposing terms of imprisonment on prisoners who pleaded guilty to aharges of breaking, entering and theft. "I see no reason for extending probation," said his Honour. . - Herbert Vivian Walkington Butt- ' rey, labourer, aged 23 years, with 17 charges against him, was sentenced t o three years' imprisonment, and His Honour directed that the prison medical authorities should examine him with a view to determining whether his mentality is normal. Thomas Butler, farmer, aged 30 years, was sentenced to one year's imprisonment. Victor Robert Ward, -rbourer, aged 24 years, two years, and Clarence William Davey, laboure", aged 24 years, to two years. These four men were concerned in a series of 18 burglaries which occurred in Wanganui from December, 1931 to July 1932. Clarence Amos Wood, aged 24 years and Francis Thomas Durran, aged 19 years, both labourers, were each sentenced to nine months' imprisonment on charges relating to attempted breaking and entering a store at Rata, near Wanganui.
