SQUADRON LEADER FINDLAY HURT IN SMASH AT HORNBY

. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Squadron-Leader J. L. Findlay, Officer Commanding the Wigram Aerodrome, received head injuries and a fractured ankle when a Government machine crashed near Hornby this morning. Squadron-Leader Findlay was sent to hospital. Squadron-Leader Findlay was accompanied by Leading Aircraftsman Simpson, who was also admitted to hospital with' head injuries. Both had an amazing escape from death When the dual Grebe aeropiane dived nose-first into the ground near the aerodrome from an estimated height of 900 feet. The 'plane was a complete wreck. The fuselage was srrtashed in half an^l the engine driven haclc into the front seat. Eye-witnesses say the maqhine got into difficulties after coming out of a loop, its nose tilted downwards, and the machine fell in a zig-zag fashion to the ground. Both men were conscious after the wreck. No explanation can be given .for the accidentJ Experts believfe that something must haye given way, j
