PATRIOT IN BREWERY
WHEN GARIBALDI DRANK TOAST TO BRITISH WORKMEN. Ceremonies in Italy in connection ' with the 50th anniversary of the death of Garibaldi, the famous patriot, have brought to light a piquant story of the great fighter's visit to a brewery i during his triumphal stay in London ' in 1864. i The episode was descrihed by tha ; late Sir William Cremer to the Milan correspondent of The Times. j "After his arrival in London," said > Sir Yfilliam, "I had several conver- , sations with Garibaldi. I remember , I was to go to see him at 6 o'clock in the morning. Once he told ma in his halting English which I could not t
at first understand: T want to see zee fabreek de beer, zee fahreek de beer.' I "I looked at him in surprise. 'Yet, i zee fabreek de hser where zee men j flog Haynau.' "Then I understood what he meant. The Austraian general Haynau had been responsible for many brutalities j in repressing the Hungarian rebellion j of 1848-49, and among other things he had flogged many naked women. "Some time after, General Haynau came to London and wished to visit Barclay's Brewery; but as soon as the workmen there knew who the visitor was they attacked him with brooms, threw mud at him, and one even buried him under a truss of hay. Hid in Public-House. "The general escaped with difficulty and himself in a public-house in the neighbourhood. "Garibaldi then expressed a wish to see the brave men, and particularly the one who had flung the truss of hay. The matter was rather delicate, because nobody had to be compromis- ■ ■ed. "It was arranged that some men should be in the courtyard grooming | the horses, and that Garibaldi should go and shake hands with the last one ! on the right-hand side. And this was ' done. "Then Garibaldi raised a wooden j mug full of stout and drank to th'e | health of all British workmen. The | scene which followed was simply extraordinary. The mug from which the general had drunk was taken and broken into a hundred pieces, which were distributed among Barclay's men."
