AN OLD LOAN

BREEAD ON WATERS COMES BACK APTER MANY DAYS. SCOTTISH CHURGH BENEFITS, A 200-year-old loan to an American congregation has proved a profitable investment for Dalmeny Church, West Lothian. The First Presbyterian Chbrch of Fifth Avenue, New York, it was annonnced the other day, is sending a donation of £118 in repayment of £18 Scots (worth 30s in modern currency) lent in the eighteenth century. In 1724 Scots settlers in New York found themselves in finaneial difficulties while erecting their church, now known as the First Presbyterian Church. An appeal was made to to the Scottish' church to help the settlers, and the first congregation to respond was Dalmeny, who sent a donation of £18 Scots. Last summer an American tourist visited Dalmeny, and hearing of the 200-year-old loan, communicated with the First Presbyterian Church on his return to New York. A fund was immedately opened to repay the debt. The money will be devoted to restoring the old church at Dalmeny, which . is regarded as the most complete exampl's of Norman architecture in Scotland. j A start has already been made with the work of rebuilaing the original church tower, which datas back to the 14th century.
