HEAVY FALLS AND COLD OPOTIKI, Friday. As the result of the cold southerly wind which blew yesterday, heavy falls of snow occurred between Gisborne and Opotiki last night. The fall in the Opotiki district is the heaviest since 1918. The hills in the vicinity of Opotiki at an early hour this morning were covered with a white mantle, and snow was failing within four miles of the borough, where sleet fell during the night. Heavy falls have also occurred in the ranges towards Cape Runaway. The .veather is still bitterly cold, and further falls are expected.
