WAR ANNIYERSARY

Eighteen years ago on Thursday Britain entered the Great War. It is 13 years since a formal peace was signed at VersailIes. Perhaps it would be truer to say a military peace, because

war has continued in the economic sphere to this day. All the hatred, the fear and the selfishness bred of the War did not die on Movember 11, 1918. They survived in the Versailles and other treaties, and are the real villain in the present depression. Fortunately there are signs nf an amelioration of the exaggerated nationalism of the postWar period; unfortunately a very sharp lesson indeed was required to bring the world to its senses. Twice this week the Prinee of Wales has spoken of the dawn of a saner and more neighbourly international era. The second occasion was the sad one of unveiling the memorial on the Somme battlefield to the armies of unknown British dead. 1 His Royal Highness said these myriad names must be the opening chapter in a new book of life. "The first chapter will tell of the growth of a neighbourly spirit among the nations. These names testify against the past and call us to a hetter civilisation 111 which it will be realised that the only sure happiness for each nation is the peace and prosperity of the whole world." Lausanne marked a start in the new direction and in a few months the world may hope to see a bigger advance made at the World Conference in London.
