SON OF A SHEPHERD. NOW SERIOUSLY ILL. Ivan Mestrovic, now lying seriou ly ill at Zogreb, Juga-Slavia, is regarded by many judges as the greatest living sculptor. His work made a great sensation when first exhibi.ted in London in 1906. He is the son of a shephard, and is not yet 50. His father taugkt him wood-carving, at which the peasants of Dalmatia ai-e adept, and then apprenticed him to a mason. To-day his work is to be seen all over Jugo-Slavia, where he is held in the highest esteem. A characteristic of his style is his fondness for gigantic figures in bronze, some of them nearly 20 feet high. Two equestrian statues of Red Indians, sculptured for the City of Chieago, are known all over the wnld. He has also done busts of Pres; 'ent Hoover and the Popo.
