HUNTLY, Wednesday. It is understood that the existing North Island coal contract to the railways expires about th'e middle of this month and considerable concern is felt in and around Huntly at a. rumour persistently current in the distriet that endeavours are being made by the Glen Afton Collieries to secure an exclusive contract for a five-year term. Such .a contract, it is alleged, will entail the shortening of mlen and working hours at the other mines, and result in considerable hardship to the men concerned. Telegrams of protsst have been sent to the Prime Minister and Minister, of Mines.
