MEN INJURED GANG OF WORKERS STRUCK BY HAIL OF ROCK ACCIDENT IN AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Several relief workers were injured, one fairly seriously, by a shower of rocks and debris, which as the result of a too powerful blasting charge, was thrown over 100 yards to where a band of men were leaving for home at the conclusion of the day's work at Western Springs, where levelling operations ar>e being conducted. Half a dozen men, some on foot and some cycling,' were proceeding along the Great North Jttoad, a considerable distance from where blasting operations had been previously conducted Suddenly there was a terrific explosion, and the men saw that a charge
had b2en fired about 100 yards or more away. The men found themselves surrounded by a hail of falling rocks. Richard Lanigan, aged 28 years, of Point Chevalier Road, who was riding a bicycle, was struclc by a boulder, measuring a foot across, which crashed on to the front of his machne almost across the handle bars. Both his hands were severely injured, the thumb of his left hand being brolcen. The front wheel of the bicycle was completely smashed. Several other workers were struck by smaller stones, receiving minor cuts, while one man sustained injuries to his head.
