COAL MINERS REFUSE TERMS OF AGREEMENT AT CONFERENCE

GREYMOUTH, Tuesday. Tlie terms proposed as the results of the recent Westport Conference of coal miners and owners for a new agreement covering the West Coast collieries, have been submitted to the • union, and rejected by them. It is lioped, however, that stoppage' of work will be averted and a fresh conference arranged. In the course of an interview with Mr. W. Purdie, secretary of the Coal ' Miners' Council, he said that the decision had been communicated to Mr. T. O. Bisliop-, secretary of the Coal Owners' Association. A request had been' made for another conference, preferably on the West Coast, to see whether an amicable settlement is possible, and also suggestions that the work eontinue in th'e meantime under the terms of the old agreement. In reply, Mr. Bishop said that the owners had instructed him to state that if the miners would send a deputation to meet them in- Wellington on Wednesday, August 10, they will permit work to eontinue under the old terms in the meantime. It is understood that the miners are sending delegates as the owners suggest.
