WATER-COOLING.

Water-cooled engines in which a pump is .used to circulata the water, often give trouble at the pump gland, as neglect to tighten the gland nut at the first sign of leakage leads to scoring of the p>ump shaft, after which a watertight joint is most difficult to obtain. A good plan is at intervals of a few months to slack the gland nut right back and introduoe a little graphite grease behind it. This keeps the packing soft and lubricates the shaft. The only thing to do when the gland always lealcs and cannot be eured by fitting new packings is to strip the pump and polish the saft until all signs of scoring have been removed.
