UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY
. / ... . / - ' AUGUST INSTALMENT:
To-day, August 1, an instalment of 'the General Unemployineht Levy will 'becom'e due, the dmohiit for thoSfe who 'pay quaPterly fyeing fiVe shilliilgs. . Those per'spfcs who bCcdme liahle for payment for the first fittife are te-, minded that they may pay quarterly, or the whole sum (20s) may be paid, in advance. v , The second instalment of the emer-, geriey unemployment charge dt the. rate of 17- in the '£ '(one penny in •every one 'shilling and eight pence or •part 'thereof) on income other thah salary or wages will also fall -due -bn August 1. The ofticial re'ceipt i'ssueii when payment ;0f the May instalment was effected must be produced when paying the second instalment. Ip connection with this charge there appears to be some misappreh'ension as to the liability of overseas income, and it is neeessary to explain that incorqe derived elesewhere .than from New Zealand is subject to the charge unless it can be proved to the satisfaetion of the Unemployment }3oard that it has heen ch.rrgeable in some other countTy withi x the Britjsh Ejominions with a special tax levied in respect of unemployment. As far as is known, New South Wales is the only place within the British Dominions to impose an unemployment tax on dividends paid to non-resident shareholders. The position will, in the majority of cases, be apparent from the dividend warrants received, as the deduction is usually shovm thereon; this evidenee would be satisfactory proof that the income is exempt in New Zealand. Where only a percentage, as representing that proportion of the dividend earned within New Sopth Wales, has been subjected to the unemployment tax, only that proportion is exempt from the emergency charge in New Zealand.
