WOMEN'S HOCKEY
MOUREA WIN AGAIN SHAMROCKS AND REPOROA CONTEST EVEN GAME MAMAKU'S SUCCESS Interesting matehes resulted from the continuation cf the women's hockey competitions played at the GovernmeUu Grounds on Saturday. All games were keenly contested, Mamaku, Mourea and Shamrocks being the winning teams. The last-men-tioned game, between Shamrock and Reporoa, aithough a little dull in the early stages, in the second sp3ll proved exciting and good combination was developed by both sides. RESULTS AT A GLANCE A Grade Shamrocks 3, Reporoa 2. Mourea 2, Taniwha 0. B Grade Mamaku 3 Whippets 1. Close Contest In their second match in the compatition, Reporoa sulfered a loss to Shamrocks but nevertheless definitely established their right to be included in the A Grade. Play had not long been started when T. Mitchell opened the account for Shamrocks from a penalty corner hit. In this half, the play was inclined to be slow but the oack play on both sides was good, K. Teurewa (Reporoa fullback) being outstanding. However both teams settled down as the game proceeded, and the game was fast as the venue of the play swiftly changed. A further two goals were scored by Shamrocks, Rangi Ratema netting after a good solo effort, and the other being the result oi" a fine passing movement by the forwards in which Mattie Mitchell played a prominent part, leaving Maudie Mitchell to finish the effort by scoring. In defence and attack, E. Mitchell, J. Chaytor and N. Webber played a fine game, and Mattie Mitchell was prominent in the forward iine, but was well marke'd by K. Teurewa. Reporoa' s first goal came from a fine solo effort by A. Rewhiti and -heir second was secured by R. iVIihinui, who received a nice pass from M. Werahiko on the left wing. Both the last-named players were very active among the losers' forvvards, while A. Rewhiti (right wing) was always to the fore. Among the backs K. Teurewa was outstanding and was a tower of strength to her side. Mr. A. C. Watts was the releree. Shamrocks 3, Reporoa 2. Mourea Win Taniwha suffered a further loss against Mourea when tliey were beaten by two goals to nil in an even game which was a trifie patehy. The io'-ing team sadly missesd the services of M. Morrison in the left full-back position but in defensive movements Ana Hato was very safe. Taniwha fielded only nine players. Among the forwards, T. Wharekura was eonspicuous but received little supp/ort from her other forwards. Ii. Ipu was the outstanding player on the Mourea side, and was responsible for the first goal eredited to her team, T. Ipu scoring the second. Mr. A. C. "Watts controlled the game. Mourea 2, Taniwha 0. Whippets Beaten The B grade match between Mamaku and Whippets gave the formei team another win after an even and ,-xeiting game in which only good work by L. Thomas, fullback, repeatedly saved the Mamaku goal from the attacks of the Whippet forwards. The game ended in favour of the country team by 3 goals against 1. Mr. Cari refereed.
