HER LUCK WAS IN
A HUSBAND IN A MILLION COMMENT BY RECORDER. A husband's devotion to his reeently wedded wife was the subject of comment at the Old Bail'ey, London, recently, when Laura Louise Tomes,
aged 29, pleaded guilty to obtaining £190 by a forged Post Office Savings Banlc warrant. It was stated that Mrs. Tomes was for some years clerk in charge of the Mile End Road town sub-post office. An elder ly Polish Jewess had a banking account, and, being illiterate, placed her hanlc hook in the custody of Mrs. Tomes. This was against the rules of the Post Office. When Mrs. Tom'es was married the defaleations were discovered. Mr. C. E. Tomes, a chemist, said he was anxious to have his wife back. In reply to'the Jtiecorder, Sir Ernest Wild, K.C., he said that this incident, which happened before their marriage, would make no difference in his regard for his wife. He was prepared to repay the whole amount of the sum she obtained. The Recorder postponed sentence . for one month, intimating that Mrs. Tomes would probably be liberated with'out any conviction being recorded. "You ought to b'e eternally grateful to your splendid husband; you are a very lucky woman," he remarked.
