WHAT A WASTE!
DELUGE OF BEER. TjtiOUSANDS OF GALLONS LOST. Iron fireproof doors, at white heat, were opened in a bonded wine and spirit warehouse in Liverpool recently to allow firemen to reach the seat of a fire. The full force of the central Liverpool brigade fought the outbreak, which originated in a portion of the building used as a case-making factory. Vast quantities of whisky and spirits were in store. The outbreak was prevented from reaching the spirit, but thousands of gallons of beer poured into the street. Four engines pumped water through the roof, and the floor, which, when it emerged was nearly at boiling point. Smoke helmets were used by the firemen as a protection agaiiist the fumes. Yast clouds of smoke issuing from the building shrouded the River Mersey, and traffic in nearby streets was delayed in the fog. After a two-hour battle the outbreak was got under control.
