IMPOSTS ON POTATOES TO PROTECT HOME GROWER. RUGBY, Tuesday. The additional import duty order j which the Treasury issued, on the recommendation of the Import Duties Advisory Committe ;, on foreign potatoes imported into Britain will be chargeable as from midnight on Wednesday, with a duty of £1 per ton. In regard to new potatoes imported between November 1 and June 30, the duty will be 4s 8d per cwt. These rates are inclusive of the existing general duty of 10 per cent. The Advisory Committee will shovtly submit a report dealing with horticultural products generally. It made the recommendation regarding potatoes in advance of this report owing to the recent abnormal importations of potatoes seriously affecting British growers.
