WORK DURING YEAR ANNUAL MEETING OF . ROTORUA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ACTIVXTIES REYIEWED The annual moeting of the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce was held on Mqnday night. Mr L. C. Ryan was ra-eleetcd auditor for the current year and thanked for his jjast services and dunation to the funds of the chamber. A hcarty vote of thanks was aecorded to the executive for the manner in whieh they had carried out their duiies. The election of the executive for the current year was held in abeyance and in the meantime, last year's executive wili carry on until new ofFicers are appointed. The question of more up-to-date means of advertising the baths was discussed and a suggestion is to made to the Minister of Tourist and Health Resorts to have electric signs installed on the eastern side of Fenton Street at tl^e interseetions of Hinemoa, Pulcuatua and Arawa Streets so that visitors will hav'e ro diffieuliy in locating them. The chamb 'r has decided to again approaeh the Rotorua Retail Traders' Association to join forces in an effort to bring all the business people under one orgunisation and thus avoid overlapping. Pres'idenls Report The annual report of the prasident (Mr. S. J. Kale) was adoptod. It stated inter alia: — "The membership at present is thirty-four — this is six less than last year. "The financial position, considcring the small membership is very satisfactory. The balance brought forward from last year was £14 17/10 and this year it amounts to £11 16/10 The rev'cipts aiuounted to £33 1/6 and the expenditure to £36 2/6 Outstanding subscriptious amount to £16 16/0. "Representations were made to the Minister of Tourist and Health Resorts pointing out that the chambei considered that the time had arrived for a general reduction in the charges for electrical power at Rotorua as re'dnctions had been mad * hy many power boards some of whieh wore obtaining their supply from stationf. operated by the Government The chamber stressod the faet that in Rotorua the po wer was supplied dir ;ct to the consumers and not through a power board. The Min'ster r:-plied that the request could not be entertained. The chamber supported the Retail Traders' Association in ils etforts tc obtain a reduction in the eharges tc the subscribers to the exchang'3. A reply was received from the Postmaster Gmeral stating that a reduction of the existing scale of rental cannot be given favourable consideration. "A remit was forwarded for consi deration at the last annual meeting of the associated chambers suggesting that reprosentations be made to the Minister of Education to have more tinie alloeated to the teaching of Agriculturai pursuits, especially ir. the country districts. Unfortunatoly our chamber was not represented by any of our members and the remit was prorosed by our Auckland proxy but lapsed for the want of a seconder. "In response to a request from the New Zealand Tourist League a letter was s'ent to the Ministn* of Tourist and Health Resorts and Minister of Public Works supporting their repw sentations that a better road should be provided to enable people to obtair access to view th1 thermal sights at Orakeikoralco with as litfcle inconvenience as possible. The chamber , supported the representations of th.e Putaruru Chamber in regard to preserving the bush alonp; the pronosed stock road beiween Mamaku anu Putaruru. "During the year ihe following r.mcters also came up for consideration: Transport Licensing Bill, Revision of Trading terms, juvenile -nd youog peoples' unemployment problem, 1 msing of camping sites at Lake Waikaremoana, conditional purchase agreement, levaluation of Crown leas ■s, price cuttiiig and suggested rep :-al of Commercial Trust Act and Cost of Living Act, hospvtal system and wlministration, private contracts in place of present Public Works system, ■amalgamation of Superannuation Boards and many other matters of more or less imporlanco received due consideration.
