CRITICAL STAGE
(Press. Assn.-
ottawa journal's comment.
— By Telegraph — Copyright).
Rec. July 27, 5.5 p.m. OTTAWA, Tuesday. The influential Montreal Gazette, commenting editorially upon its Ottawa corresponde-nt's despatch, says that tlxe Imperial Economic Conference at the vex-y outset, has reached a critical stage. Responsible correspondents are- naturally and properly painting the picture in sweetest colonrs, but it is beeoming evident that if -Ottawa is to overcome obstacles already encountered, some of the viewpoints already expressed, must undergo modification. If the complications which have arisen are as foxnnidahle as some of the despatches cabled, the co-opera-tivo spirit is certain to undex'go a much more severe test than was contemplated whelx the conference opened. The uncertainly which surrounds the attitude of the British delegates appears to be hampering the conference, and creates a situation, for which the word "critical" is not too strong. The conference is getting to grips on vital business in perfect haimxony.
