j OLD MASTER FOUND STUCK I TO BACK OF CHEAP PICTURE
ADELAIDE, Saturday. \ A painting by an old master and worth probably £1000 has been found by a South Australian woman, tacked on the back of a picture she bought in a seeond-hand shop. It has been identified as the work of a noted Dutch artist of the 17th : century. The Curator of Adelaide Art Gallery (Mr. L. A Wilkie) examined the painting, and considers it a good specimen of the work of Vandermeer, who died in 1667. i The woman who made the discovery went into a second-hand shop to buy an old picture franm i The one she chose had a picture of some criclceters. •' When she dismantled the picture j she found an old painting tacked in ' as backing. Out of euriosity she took the painfing, which depicts a river scene, to Mr. Wilkie, who pronounced it as a mastei'piece. It will he sent to England to be j valued and sold. |
