FALL IN STOCK VALUES.

"To say that stock values are low is putting it mildy," remarked a farmer, in describing his visit to a sale in the north. He related the experience of a fellow-pastoralist, who, 15 months ago, brought a promising "line" of store cattle at £5 per head. They did well during the summer and autumn, and were in prime condition when offered at the recent sale. The farmer naturally expected to realise a reasonable profit for his outlay. Eight of the cattle brought a top price of £2, eight more 30/-, and the remaining nine half a sovereign apiece! The farmer also told the tale of a friend who bought a cow in full milk for 17/6. She turned out one of the best he had ever possessed. "Ten years ago the same cow would have made anything up to £20," he added.
