GIRL SUCCEEDS ON BREACH OF PROMISE AFTER 20 YEARS.
HUNDREDS OF LOVE LETTERS. j Three hundred love letters and an engagement ring were exhibited at : the Skibbereen Cireuit Court, in Coun- \ ty Cork, Ireland, at the hearing of ' an action in which MoJlie Minihan, of Smorane, claimed £300 for breach of i promise of marriage from John Pat- j rick Walsh, farmer, of Derryleigh. ; The parties are now about 36 years of age, and the promise of marriage was alleged to have been made when they were 21 years old. j Miss Minihan gave evidence that Walsh was prepared to marry ber in 1921, but his mother objeeted to the marriage. He went to America later that year because he was disappointed at not receiving the farm on his father's death. He persuaded her to cancel an arrangement whereby she was to enter the nursing profession, and a month' before he left for America he gave her an engagement ring. He corresponded with her until 1926, and returned to Ireland in 1929. { Defending counsel contended that the action was barred by the Statube of Limitations, but counsel for Miss Minihan submitted that the last letter received from Walsh was in February, 1926, and the civil bill had been issued in February, 1932, just before the six years had expired. The Judge held that Miss Minihan was entitled to succeed, and that there was an arrangement as to marriage between the parties. Accordingly he gave udgment for £20 and costs, remarking that the girl had not lost 1 much.
