FROG'S RECORD LEAP
HAS GUARD OF .HONOUR. The historic frog-jumping championship of Calaveras County, California, was won recently by Budweiser, a nimble frog from Stockton, who leapt 13ft 5in, thus breaking his own last year's record by 2ft. A crowd of 20,000 thronged the little mining town of Angels Camp, which is the scene of Mark Twain's famous story, "The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." Frog jumps for many decades past are recorded, but Budweiser's leap has beaten all. On arriving from Stockton, Budweiser was met at the outskirts of Angels Camp by Major Mentz and escorted to the jumping field by a guard of honour and brass band, while the streets were lined with cheering throngs.
