BORAH STATES U.S. MUST WGRK FOR HER OWN ADVANTAGE
-By Telegraph — Copyright). j
liec. July 24, b.b p.m. WASHINGTON, Saturday. ! Senator Borah, in a radio broad- ; cast, discussing reparations and war debts, praised the Lausanne agreement as a harbinger of peace, hope and humanity. He urged an early convocation of an international conference to discuss important economic matters, ineluding reparations and war debts. It is noted that this is indirect opposition to the State Department's I latest utterances that such a conference should be limited to purely } economic questions. ^ Senator Borah again developed his j favourite theme that disarmament is • the test and that the response to Lau- j sanne is at Geneva. J Ho intimated that a United States ! revision of debts might be necessary j and desirahle. If the policies initi- | ated at Lausanne are carried forward, j there will be a time, he said, when it | will be distinctly in the interests of j the United States to consider again j the question of debts, but he definite- j ly stated that cancellation must de- i pend upon the settlement of other war problems. He stressed the importance of the international situation upon the domestie economies, and frankly stated that America must take the course calculated to operate to her best advantage.
