CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The official Labour candidate for the Southern Maori seat, Mr. Hari Wi Katene, has not been allowe^ td stand, his nopiination paper being r.efused by the returning officer on the g-round that it is understood he is a. European, having been so declared in 1917. Nominations closed at noon, and Mr. Katene was advised of the position on depositing his papers. To-night he will leave for Wellington in order to take legal advice as to the next steps he should adopt. ; The returning officer says he a?ted on the instructions of the chief elec-tox-al ofiqcer. Mr. Katene stood as an Independent candidate at the last election, hnd no objection was raised theffi,. He contends that his Europeanisatiori in 1917 applies only to matters concerning native lands, and not to the Electoral Act. .
