NEW LAND LAWS
The recently gazetted regulations for the administration of the Land Laws Amendment Act have been awaited for some time. Provision is made for loans for the erection of buildings the carrying out of improvements, and the actual purchase of land. In the case of buildings and improvements, advances will be made up to 80 per cent. of the value of the completed improvements, and in the case of land purhase, up to 90 per cent. of the total purchase money. T^his revives the contention, previously made, that before authorising* Government expenditure on land purchase, the Government would be much better advised to utilise some at least of the developed and partially developed Crown land which is available for settlement in various parts of the Dominion. At a time when the necessity for conservation of the unemployment funds is a matter of urgeney, an authority which will permit heavy expenditure for the purchase of small farm sections, must be carefully safeguarded. We do not suggest that such expenditure is uhjustified, for in certain instances, it is undoubtedly necessary, but we do suggest that before authorising an extensive amount in loans for land purchase, some defmite attempt should be made to utilise Crown lands which are al~ ready available.
