Rec. July 19, 11.5 p,m. SYDNEY, Tuesday. ^.t the tin hare inquiry, Jack Munro, director of the Australian Coursing Club, explained how his company and another company joined forces, pooling3the shares and placing themselves unreservedly in the hands of Judge Swindell. Counsel for Swindell said that no bribery of witness was ever contemplated. The Royal Commissioner replied that the»whole thing reeked of bribery. Mr. Munro added that the Premier's secretary, Mr. McCauley, was mentioned in connection with a. tin hare licenSe at Wollongong, and a man named Cowdray threatened "he would tell the world" if they did not get the license, they eventually did get it. Munro said that 12,000 fully paid shares in the Australian Coursing club were issued in the name of Hutton, but he did not get the script. Swindell later said, T do not want them in my, name." Mr. Monaghan, who is assisting the Commissioner, said: You knew Swindell was going to use these shares for bribery? | Monro : My opinion is that he wanted to make sure of holdings in my I company, 'in fact in every company • conducting coursing. John Bateman, director of the j Greyhound Coursing Association, related a conVersation in which Swindell told witness that he must have three seats on his bo&rd in order to get dog racing restored at night. He emphasised that "J.T." presumably meaning the ex-Premier, Mr. J. T. Lang, insisted on that course. Swindell duly submitted his three names and they were accepted. Mr. Monaghan: Were you pleased? i Witness: We reckon we were beaten by Swindell. Mr. Monaghan: Over the voicc of , the board, was the voice of Swin- ■ dell? ! Witness: Apparently. Mr Monaghan: You understood him to say he was working for Mr. Lang? Witness: Yes, although I did not believe it. The hearing was adjourned.
