LOSS OF LANCASHIRE TRADE
— By Tolograpli — Copyright) .
llec. July 14, 1U p.m. LONDON, Thursday. Most of the Irish trade with Great Britain is done in Lancashire. The leading produce importers in Manchester have notified producers in Ireland they must cut their prices 20 per cent. to counteract the elfect of the new duty. Irish egg packers have been tohi that they must in future send their snpplies carriage paid and duty paid free to Liverpool or Holyhead. A memher of the biggest importing firm in the north of England states that if the price of Irish eggs increased, the dealers there will place orders elsewhere. The Irish producers must pay the duty if they want to keep the valuable trade in Lancashire. The leading provision buyers of Great Britain and in London stores agree that alternative supplies are rapidly available, so that the absence of Irish produce would not affect the gcneral price level. The British public weuld certainly not pay more for Irish produce than for other kinds.
