OBITUARY.
A well known and highly respected resident of the district, in the person of Mr. George Colebrook, passed away at the Whakatane Hospital yesterday after a lengthy illness. The late Mr. Colebrook was born in Kent, England, in 1856, and came to New Zealand in 1864 with his parents, who took up their residence in Auckland. The lure of the goldfields drew Mr. Colebrook to the Thames and Ohinemuri districts while he was still a youth, and he spent about 35 years of his life in that occupation, residing for many years in. Waihi. He came to Whakatane twenty-one years ago and took up a block of land at Edgecumbe, on the Rangitaiki Plains, where he has resided ever since. Coming here at a time when the Rangitaiki swamp was in its early stage, Mr. Colebrook played a prominent part in the pioneering activities. He also gavc much of his attention toward assisting the progress of the district in other ways, being at one time a member of the Whakatane County Council and the local harbour board. He was for some time a director of the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company, and during his long residence here connected himself with the A. and P. Association and other local instituticdis. The late Mr. Colebrook leaves a widow and ! six sons and five daughters, over ! forty grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The sons and daughters are :' Messrs George Colebrook (Gisborne), J.
