Rec. July 13, 10.10 p.m. SYDNEY, Wednesday. Mr. Justice Halse Rogers, sitting as Royal Commissioner, opened the inquiry into the charges arising from the issue of mechanical hare licen.ses and permits for fruit machines. Mr. Monaghan, K.C., who is assisting the Commissioner, gave a lengthy opening address, and said that the evidence in regard to the fruit machines would indicate that there was brihery and corruption to secure immunity from prosecution. In December 1930, there was deliherate Ministerial sanction for the use of fruit machines in hotels, despite their illegality according to the Crown ruling. Other phases of the inquiry concerncd alleged bribery and corruption in connection with the proceeds from the machines which should have been enrmarked for hbspitals. Evidence was then opened in regard to the re-introduction of mechanical hare racing.
