WHAKATANE D.H.S. HAS VERY PQPTJLAR WTN. *; ■ SECONDASY SCHOOLS' TOURNEY On S.aturday morning the B.O.P. Combined High Schools tournament took place in the Opotiki sh'owgrounds. The different coioured uniform.s lent variety and colouf to the scene. The day was one of success for Whakatane, who sueeeeded in scoring points in every event. The basketball matches were fast and exciting, in each case the successful teams only winning by one goal. The football match between Tauranga and Opotiki took place in the morning, Tauilanga performihg a rousing haka as they took the field. In the early stages, the ball was mostly in Tauranga's territory. Opotiki fumbled the ball badly at first, and Taurahga' gcored and convert'ed in the first quarter of an hour. Just before half-time, however, Opotiki were playing up to their usual standard and T. Walker scored a try, but J. Mihaeri failed to convert, making the score 5 — 3 in fayour of Tauranga. Aft?er half-time, play was fairly even but Opotiki scored with a drop from a penalty, and brought the final score to 6 — 5 in favour of Opotiki. Simultaneously, the Whakatane boys met Te Puke. This ended in a decided win for Whakatane. In the athletic events, the points were between Whakatane, Tauranga, and Opotiki. Tauranga girls were winners in" the High Jump and the 75 yards, Whakatane gained points in all the athletic events, and Opotiki were successful in the girls* and boys' relays. In the final football matches, Whaktane beat Tauranga, and Opotiki : beat Te Puke. The tournament end- 1 ed well in favour of "Whakatane, who had scored 18 points, Tauranga 10, i Opotiki 5 and Te Puke 2. Whakatane's win was very popular. An unfortunate accident occurred during the overhead ball event, when Miss A. Tassell fell and broke her j arm. She was taken io the Opotiki : Hospital, where the arm was X-rayed and after treatment was able ~ to return to the field as an onlooker. Her sister, MisS S. Tassell, took her place in the basketball team.
