arctic voyage ENGINEER SAYS WILKINS NEVER MAf>E HONEST ATTEMPT. CRUISE OF THE NAUTILUS

-By Telegraph — Copyright)

ADELAIDE, Tuesday. Mr. J. Jansen, an engineer on the Amisrican motor-ship Sawokla, which has arrived here described the attempt by Sir Hubert Wilkins to reach the North Pole in the Sfibmarine Nautilus as the "sorriest mess" he had ever been in. Jansen, who was the second engineer on the Nautilus, said: "For four weeks before the day on which the plunge under the ice was made the men aboard knew that Wilkins did not intend to make a serious attempt to reach his objective. "Every man on the vessel was seared. We all knew of the poor condition of the submarine. "We had lost the stern driving rudder; but, regardless of this, Wilkins ordered us to dive. We made the dive successfully, but stayed under the ice only ten minutes. "That was the only time that the ship was a submarine from the time it left America. "Out of the crew of 30 there were only six qualified submarine men aboard."
