NEW DEPARTMENT OF SMALL FARM PLAN SHOULD ' BE PR ACTICABLE. ' ; VALUABLE TO FARMERS. A new scheme for finding work on farms for the unemployed has been developed by the Department". Of Agriculture and the terms of agreement, etc., may be seen at the office of the district organiser of the Small Farm Plan. 1 " _ Briefly outlined, the new scheme is as follows; — Any farmer who "is prepared to put a hitherto unemployed man on his farm to nlilk an extra herd for him may apply to the Minister for Employment for a loan for' the* purpose of erecting a cottage and for sheds, if these be necessary t ■ The farmer, on his part, undertakes to employ and keep the cottage occupied by a married man in addition to the usual employees on the farm, and to supply a herd for the maii to milk and care for, either on a weekly wage or purely and simply on "a/sharemilking basis. ' " The farmers who borrows' th'e money undertakes to pay back th'e capital and interest by intalments spread/ if he so wishes, over a period of not more than ten years. The repayment of instahwenfs is arranged h'alf-y early, and the first instalment is not payable until' six months after the date when the ' interest commences to run. The interest does not commence until one -year after the buildings have beeii; coinpleted, which actually gives the farmer eighteen. months from the time'he starts his second herd • to ' the time When he must start to make repayfriehts. • • Several prominent farmets in the Opotiki district have already been making inquiries about this new scheme, and in several cases have expressed the opinion that it is likely tq prove much more practjcable than the original small farm plari. On the face of it, it would ceftainly appear that this Is so, as it will permit those with large areas of suitable dairying land to obtaln assistance in putting on a Second herd. It is,' of course, a well known 'faet that after a herd has reached a certairt nUmber, two herds can be worked more profitably than one. Farmers with sufficient acreage to run two herds instead of one would be well advised to look over the form of agreement and discuss the wholo matter with the district organiser, for it would appear that here; i£ an opportunity for them to help themselves, the unemployed_andJheJDomL_
