AUSTRALIAN PROPOSALS

SUVA, Friday. The Commonwealth proposals at the Ottawa Conferexxce to assist the meat industry, will be hased upon a schedule of duties drawn up by the London representatives of the Australian industry, together with a recommendation that the British Government should restrict foreign imports with the object of adjusting them to provide for the seasonal requirexnents of the British markets, thus avoiding gluts and shortages and assuring steady average prices. The tariff proposals are: Beef, mutton, lamb, pork, veal, preferential Empire tariff, all free. Full foreign tariff per pound: Beef, lHd; mutton, lid; lamb, 2d; pork, lJd; veal, lhd. Preferential foreign tariff per pouxxd Beef, 2d; mutton, :ld; lamb, ld; pork, 2d; veal, 2d. The Australian industry's ox;iginal proposals, which are now ahaxxdoned, were an ahsolute preference of lid per lb oxx frozen axxd ehilled mutton, lamb, beef, veal and frozen sundries; and an ahsolute preference of 2d per lb. on preserved, canned, smoked, and salted xxieats. The leaders of the Australian industry, on consideratioxx, yielded to the strong London representations that the latter high rate of protection was impractieable.
