WELLINGTON, Wednes. "Altliough it might be necessary to supplement the unemployment relief funds, nothing can be done so far as increasing the v/ages tax is concerned until Parliament meets" said the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, to-day referring to a statement by Mr. J. McCombs, M.P. in Chistchurch, to the effect tliat he had it on the best authority that the Government was considering raising the tax from one shillimg in the pound, to 1/9. Mr. Forbes said the Government had „ not given any consideration to raising the tax, and when Parliament met the position would be reviewed. "Those who have had experience in the House of Repregentatives know," he added, "that these statements of Mr. McComb a^e to be taken with a grain of salt."
