GERMAN COMPANIES FORCED TO WRITE DOWN CAPITAL.

BERLIN", Wednesday. Forty-eight ships, totalling 238,000 tons, one-quarter of the Nortli German Idoyd's total tonnage, are laid up. The company's balance sheet sliows a net loss of £458,900. The Hamburg-America line shows a loss of £230,800. In order to cover their losses both companies are writing off two-thirds of their capital.
