YOUTH'S RIVER DIVE
WOMAN UNDER LOCK GATES. A 21-year-old youth, Stephen Bottoiu, of Wardley Street, Wandsworth (England), made a dramatic reappearance after being given up for lost, when he dived. into the River Wandle at Wandsworth recently to try to save a woman who was said to be in the water. With two companions, Bottom was in a restauarant, when a girl rushed in shouting: "Somebody's in the river" The three hurried to the spot, and Bottom and William Hillsbey, aged 25, jumped in. "I dived 30 feet from Wandsworth High Street Bridge, and reached the woman's body as it was being drawn towards the lock," said Bottom. ")I held on until the force of the water dragged the woman's body underneath the lock gates." A number of people sow Bottom disappear, and gave him up for drowned. After an interval of several minutes, however, he suddenly reappeared in the darkness of the river bank. He had thrown off his overcoat, and although almost exhausted, had managed to wade through the water to safety.
