DUNEDIN, Monday. A claim for damages amounting to £101/8/0 was made by John Jow, dabourer of Outram, against Wholesalers Limited, at a special sitting of the Magistrate's Court before Mr. J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., to-day. In a statement, plaintiff said that at the Outram hotel, as the result of drinking stout supplied by Wholesalers Limited, which contained sulphate of copper, he had suffered illUess, and claimed £30, for loss of wages, £1/8/0 for medical expenses and £70 for general damages, and 'illness. Evidence was given to show 'that plaintiff and two others, who were served from the same bottle, became very sick. A sample of the stout was sent to the Government unalyst at Dunedin, who fonnd that it contained 4.10 per cent. of sulphate •of copper. For the defence, Dr. Evans, said the effect of taking copper sulphate could not possibly last a month; it was merely an emetic. The state of plaintiff's teeth was sufficient to cause the illness. To the Magistrate, Dr. Evans said that sulphate of copper could set up gastritis. The Magistrate reserved his decision.
