Heavy new taxation has been imposed in the Irish Free State, including taxes on all forms of entertainment and dances, outdoor sports, horse-raeing and greyhound-racing. A 25 per cent. levy on the hospital share of the sweepstakes proceeds drawn after March 1 this year is estimated to bring in £650,000 ti ier. Tobacco duties have been increased by ls 2d per lb., with a rebate of 7:1 for every pound of unmannractui'ed tobacco received by the Irish manufacturers. The standard rate of income tax is increased from 3s 6d to 5s in the £. A duty of 4d per lb. is placed on bea; sugar duty is reduced by id per lb. A packing tax at the rate of 2d per package or parcel and 2d pei' bottle will apply to all articles of food, drink, cosmetics and medical preparations. The corporation profits tax is increased to 7i per cent, for Irish and foreign companies trading in Ir eland, which do not maintain in Ireland a branch register of shareholders. There is a tax on newspapers and periodicals imported in bullc quantities, of which the superficial area of the page or front cover does not exceed 320 square inches. The full rate of duty will be l&d per copy, with a preferential rate of Id.
