ROTORUA CLUB
J. McCALL WINS SATURDAY'S ROAD RACE OF 14 MILES. FASTEST TIME TO N. HOWE. The fourth cycle road race of the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club's winter programme was held on Saturday over a return course of 14 miles from Fenton Street to the turn-off to Tikitere. The wintry weather conditions for the race provided a good test for the riders and fair times were recorded. The limit man, McCall, left the starting post sharp at 2.15 p.m., foL lowed by G. Haycock, S. Howe, H7 Howe, and N. Howe (scr.) The position of the riders remained unchanged on the outward course, H. Howe, however, suffering from cramp and retiring. At the turn the backmarkers, S. Howe and N. Howe, had gained ground on McCall and Haycock, who were, neVertheless, riding well. N. Howe passed S. Howe soon after commencing the homeward run, but could not head off McCall and Haycock, who passed the finishing point in fhat order. McCall, th'e winner, rode a very well judged race, and Haycock is also showing signs of regaining form. The scratch man, N. Howe, found the handicaps too much for him in the bad riding conditions, but succeeded in securing the fastest time of the series for the fourth time. The detailed times and placings of the riders follow: — J. McCall (5 min.), 46 min. 27 sec., 1; G. Haycock (2£ min.), 46
min. 45 sec., 2; N. Howe (scr.), 42 min. 45sec., 3. S. Howe (1 fnin. 10 sec.), 44 min. 25 sec., 4. H. Howe retired.
