STOCK IN STREETS
council takes action to prevent damage to trees. The woa'ks comanittee reported to the Rotorua Borough Council last night tlaat it had written to the owner of the cows recently driven through King Street asking him whether he could not dispense with *the use of the street. Cr. Johnson thought the only way out of the difficulty was to lead the cows, and thus prevent damage to trees and hedges. Cr. Coleman said he had often watched the cows and they did not loiter, and at present there were no trees or shrubs in the street. It would be a big hardship if the anoveaaaent of the stock was prevented. Cr. Wackrow said there was no wish to cause any hardship to Mr. Armer (the owner of the aniiaaals) Ca\ Johiason aaaoved that Mr. Armer be requested to lead the cows. The reason why there were no trees planted was that they would be destrqyed. The cows traversed no fewer than five streets. The crossing of tho railway line was also a source of danger. The growth of the borough justified the council iia asking Mi'. Armer to keep his cows off tlae^street or conaply with the by-laws. Cr. N. M. Keane seconded the motion. The planting of trees was retarded by the presence of the cows. It was necessary to give way to the progress of the town. Cr. Coleman declared he did not refxect upon the decision of the council, but wanted to prevent hardships to Mr. Armer. The Mayor put in a ' plea for Mr. Armer. He recognised the position so far as the developanent of King Street was concerned. But he pointed out that at night the cows grazed on Mr. Armer's own land, and at day time on Crown sections. Before long those sections would be offered for selection and Mr. Armer would then not be able to use the land. It would be easy enough to protect trees planted for 12 months. It would be a hardship on Mr. Armer to compel | him to take other streets or lead the beasts. The sections would probi ably be sold within 12 months. Cr. Wackrow suggested altering the use of the paddocks to avoid meeting the school children. Cr. Johnson's motion was then put and carried.
