Rec. Julle 22, 7.0 pVm. .LONDON, Tuesday. The general events of the Eucharistlc GongresS at Dublin to-day, were social rather thaii : devotional. Twenty-thousand attended a garden " party : at Blacfc Rock Gollege ground, overlooking the hlue sea, like the Mediterranean,- furnishing a'brilliant- s'ettipg. - - - The Papal Lega'te (Cardinal Lauri) in scarlet, in' the middle -of purple gowned pr|p,ates; made a striking picture. Mr:, de Valera and his Ministers were present. uresq ict pmost the ofue ergsu eao Oue of the most picturesque figures of the day was the Archbishop Mar Ivanios of Bethany, who recently returned- to the Roman f old, after leaving the J acobite Church, to which he and thousands of his followers belonged and which had been regarded as heretical' for several centuries. There waq a striking scene - on the jlawn, 'when thousands dropped to "their knees and Archbishop Ivanios gave his apostolic blessing. There was a brilliant scene tonight when 5000 attehded a reception at Dublin Castle in honour of the Papal Legate, the dipIomatic corpsj and Ieading citizens were present but no invitation was sent to the Governor-General (Mr James McNeill) which created much comment. The ohtrusion of politica.1 prejudice is deplored.. 'Mr. de Valei'a welcomed the Papal Legate, but he will not be present at the Governor-General's dinner party to-morrow evening, because he is attending only social functions in connection with the Congress. An account of the Congress will be broadcast in Australia at 7 o'clock on Thursday morning, summer time. Indulgences Granted The Archbishop of Dublin announced that the Pope ,on the occasion of the Congress, has granted the following indulgences to the faithful throughout the world in order to encourage them to make reparations to
the Sacred Heart for the sins of the world. In accordance with the recent eneyclical lettei*, the first indulgence is one of 10 yeai's which is extended each time the faithful devoutly and conti'itely receive the- blessed sacrament, and recite besides five paters, aves and glories. Secondly a plenary ,indulgence is available. once weekly to the faithful for having received the sacrament of Penances and Holy Eucharist, and for having visited the blessed sacrament throughout the week and recited the prayers -presci-ibed above.
