— By Telegraph — Copyrlght.l
Rec. June 22, 7.45 p.m. SYDNEY, Wednesday. Giving evidence at the Goode iriquiry, Mr. W. J. Cleary, formerly Chief Railway Superintendent, related conversations with Goode, while the latter was Goods Traffic Superintendent in the Railway Department. Referring to contracts, Mr. Cleary said that he questioned Goode as to giving preference to Vernon, whose tender was much higher than the others. Goode replied that there were irregularities in-the contracts -xejected. Mr. Cleary. discovered irregularities in Vernon's contract. ' After a numher of suhsequent discussions, the Railway Department told Goode his conduct was unjustified and he should be -dismissed, but in view of his long service, he would be given another position in order to retain his superannuation. Irregularities were later discovered, and upon investigation, Goode was dismissed ' in 1931. Later Goode asked Mr. Cleary to reinstate him, if only for half an hour as • Chief Gontract Superintendent, so that he might regain his- superannuation and rehabilitate himself in the eyes of the -public. Mr. Goode added, "Whether you do this or not, I shall be given a position in the Transport Department. There is room for us both in the transport business. I shall be Chief Transport Commissioner and I shall then be over you." Mr. Cleary answered: "We only know you as being dismissed for maladministration, -and since then have heard more serious things about you."
