ON WRONG SIDE

CAR ANI) MOTOR TRIICK MEET ON NGAKURU ROAD CORNER. TRUCK DRIVER FINED. A collisjon between a motor lorry and a car upon the Ngakuru Road towards the end of last month resulted in a charge of driving upon the Wrong side of the road being brought against a native named Irihei Hairia in the Magistrate's Court on Monday. Edwanl Holdsworth, the driver of ihe motor car, stated that on May 28 he was driving from Ngakuru into Rotorua, when he saw lights coming round a corner and when he reach'ed it saw that a lorry was approaching on its wrong side and it was impossible to avoid a collision. He had slowed down to practically five miles an hour. Haifia was travelling too fast and cut the corner. Albert Piper, a passenger in the car, said the truek was on the wrong side and there was no possible way of avoiding a collision and Francis Brosnahan corroborated this opinion. For the defence, Mr. M. H. Hampson submitted that, taking into consideration the width and condition of the road, the defendant was in a reasonably safe position. ^The court decided that defendant was at fault and fined him £2, with costs £2 17s.
