RADIO NOTES

Local conditions have not been good for reception during the past weelc. Changeable climatic conditions have brought with them a train of static and fading. Daylight reception has heen normal, hut soon after darkness fell, static made listening not altogether a pleasure. 2YA has heen the most dependable station, though 3YA has arrived with good strength on several occasions. Broadcasts from ships, aeroplanes, submarines, and even golf courses are carried out by a novel method. It is not possible to run wires from a broadcasting* studio to a moving vehicle and it is not practical to run trailing wires between the studio and out-of-the-way places golfers get into. One often wonders how this is done. Aetually it is done by means of a portable transmitter, carried on the back of .the announcer and linked up with the studio via short-wave radio. These low powered, short-wave signals are picked up by a short-wave receiver, and placed upon the modulating apparatus of the transmitter. An International Wireless Conference is to be held in Madrid this year, and amateur- transmitters are' banding themselves together in order that they may claim a fair proportion of the available wave bands. The amateur has developed all of the bands below 200 metres, and his discoveries have been quickly taken up hy commercial interests. It is not yet known whether the New Zealand amateurs will send a representative, but they hope to have a voice in the conference. In 1927, Mr. Gibbs, recently chief telegraph engineej, fought their cause at the Washington conference, and his efforts on their behalf will go down in the annals of amateur radio. No less than 37 stations now operate on the broadcast band in New Zealand. They are: — 1YA Auckland, 332m, 500w.; 2YA Wellington, 416.4m, 5kw; 3YA Christchurch,. 305.9m, 500w; 4YA Dunedin, 461.3m 500w; 1ZB Auckland, 275.2m, 18w; 1ZH Hamilton, 479.5m, 45w; 1ZJ Auckland, 227.3m, 26w; 1ZM Manurewa, 247.9m, 17w; 1ZQ Auckland, 252m, 25w; 1ZR Auckland, 275.2m, 70w; 1ZS Auckland, 211.3m, 5w; 2YB New Plymouth, 243.9m, 100w; 2ZB Napier, 238.1m, 7.5w; 2ZD Masterton, 245.2m, 2.5w; 2ZE Eketahuna, 247.9m, 10w; 2ZF Palmerston North, 285.7m, 150w; 2ZH Napier. 238.1m, 65w; 2ZI Hastings, 266m 15w; 2ZJ Gisborne, 260.9m, 20w 2ZK Wanganui, 500m, 120w; 2ZL Hastings, 225.6m, 26w; 2ZM GiS- " i- s.
