Sullivan) to form an unemployed relief committee. The Mayor who is chairman of the Local Unemployment Committee informed the meeting that the object was to from a local Unemployed Relief Committee to be a separate entity from the Unemployment Committee. His Worr.hip stated that the local Unemployment Committee were to administer and assist the schemes of the Unem•iioyment Board and to find employment for the men; the time had now come when it was necessary to from a separate committee to render assistance additional to relief work. He urged that any formed committee work should be done in conjunction with the Hospital Boai'd. After considerable discussion the following committee was set up Messrs L. Buddlo (chairman), Rev. Lilburn, Rev. Weymouth, Rev. Day, Mrs. W. McCracken. Messrs. F. Moncur. E. Hansen, C. Suclcling, A. J. Atkinson and C. E. Gibberd. Mr. Buddle (member of tho Hospital Board) informed the meei/.ng that owing to the drastic curtailment of the government subviay Ihe board had found it necessary o strictly limit the funds available for outdoor relief. On the motion of Mr. W. Cartwright it was resolved that lan.diords be appealed to to assist the unemployed as far as possible by making a reduction in the rents of prem'.ses. The following motion was carried unanimously : "That this public meeting of citi--:ens called by His Worship the Mayor of Whakatane to consider means of relieving the distress due to the inadequacy of the means available, calls upon the Government to capitalise a portion of the proceeds of the unemployment tax by the raising of an internal loan (compulsorily if necessary) at a low i*ate of interest, the proceeds of such loan to be used for putting into operation immediately of land settlement and roading scliemes and other permanent work providing full time employment for men at present unemployed in lieu of the present methods of unemployment relief."
